Transforming Limited Space into an Outdoor Oasis
Our team was tasked with designing the outdoor space of a new carriage home situated on a modest lot in Wayne, Pennsylvania. The primary objective for the Wayne residence was to create a series of inviting and functional outdoor rooms that would maximize the property’s potential while maintaining a cohesive and visually appealing design.
Crafting Three Distinct Outdoor Rooms
To make the most of the available space, we designed two unique outdoor rooms: a swimming pool garden and a sunny conversation nook. Each space was carefully planned to serve a specific purpose and provide the homeowners with a variety of options for relaxation and entertainment.
Sustainable Driveway Solution
One of the challenges we faced with the Wayne residence was creating a driveway that would not only provide access to the property but also contribute to the overall aesthetic. Our solution was to install a gravel driveway, which offers a casual and relaxed feel while also serving a vital secondary function: storm water infiltration. This eco-friendly approach helps to manage runoff and minimize the property’s environmental impact.
Unifying the Spaces with Natural Materials
To create a sense of continuity and make the property feel more expansive, we utilized a carefully selected palette of natural materials throughout the outdoor rooms. Pennsylvania bluestone, mica schist, cobblestone, and salvaged brick were chosen for their regional appropriateness, durability, visual appeal, and ability to blend seamlessly with the surrounding community and landscape. The consistent use of these materials helps to link the various spaces together, creating a cohesive and harmonious design.
Our team’s expertise in landscape architecture and design allowed us to transform this small property into a stunning outdoor oasis that exceeded the homeowners’ expectations. By carefully considering the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the site, we were able to create a series of inviting and functional outdoor rooms that made the most of the available space.
