Fostering Community Engagement
Bryn Mawr College sought to expand the use of its Campus Center and enhance the sense of community on campus. Our firm was retained to help create a lively, interactive, and engaging outdoor space that would serve as a hub for student life and activities.
Engaging the Campus Community through a Charrette Process
To ensure that the design of the new outdoor spaces aligned with the needs and desires of the campus community, our team implemented a charrette process. This collaborative design activity involved a cross-section of students, faculty, and staff, allowing them to contribute their ideas and insights. The input received during the charrette contributed greatly to the final design of the project.
Transforming the Campus Center Plaza and Merion Green
Based on the feedback gathered during the charrette, our firm designed an expanded Campus Center plaza that serves as a vibrant gathering space for the college community. The plaza encourages social interaction, studying, and relaxation, with seating areas, landscaping, and amenities that cater to the diverse needs of students.
In addition to the plaza, our team regraded Merion Green to provide accessible pathways, ensuring that all members of the campus community can navigate the space. The regrading also allowed for the creation of a formalized entry to Senior Row, enhancing the aesthetic appeal and functionality of this iconic campus feature.
Prioritizing Pedestrian Access and Safety
To create a more pedestrian-friendly environment, our team worked to reduce vehicular access to the campus core. By minimizing the presence of vehicles, we were able to prioritize the safety and comfort of students, faculty, and staff as they move through the outdoor spaces. This approach also contributes to a more collegial and intimate campus atmosphere, fostering a stronger sense of community.
The Bryn Mawr College Campus Center and Merion Green Renovation exemplifies our firm’s commitment to creating outdoor spaces that enhance the college experience and promote community engagement. By involving the campus community in the design process and prioritizing accessibility, safety, and social interaction, we have helped transform the heart of the Bryn Mawr College campus into a vibrant and inclusive environment.
